OSRAM launches new LEDs with improved performance
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors presents a new generation of the compact high-power LED DURIS S 8 with significant efficacy improvement of up to 17%. This good performance level has been achieved by the introduction of a new leadframe material and chip generation. With the same footprint, three versions with different lumen packages are available to match different application requirements. The new DURIS S 8 is pin-to-pin compatible to the previous generation so customers can easily find the optimal LED for their lighting application, e.g. omnidirectional and directional retrofits or downlights.
The new DURIS S 8 is available with a footprint of 5.0 mm x 5.0 mm and six, eight or ten chips. The three product versions feature different brightness levels of 375, 500 and 610 lumens. Due to an enhanced epoxy-based package the product versions offer great lumen maintenance, even at high currents and temperatures. With a forward voltage in the range of 19-32 V, depending on type, simpler and more compact driver designs can be realized. The new products are pin-to-pin compatible to the current generation and customers can use the same optics and accessories. Due to the high lumen packages single light source design can be implemented. This avoids multiple shadows, simplifies lens and PCB design and leads to lower systems costs as well as an improved total system efficacy of up to 17 percent.
The DURIS S 8 LEDs with six and eight chips offer an improved efficacy of 135 lm/W at 3000 K and 150 mA, the ten-chip-version features 131 lm/W. All versions exhibit a good color rendering index (CRI) of 80 and correlated color temperatures (CCT) between 2700 and 6500 Kelvin (K). All three versions of the multichip-LEDs are also binned according to the McAdams principle. Based on a 3-step or 5-step MacAdams ellipse the DURIS S 8 ensures color consistency in any lighting application. To create realistic application conditions, the new LED is grouped at 85° C instead of at room temperatures for color binning. Therefore the new product generation is ideal for use in indoor lighting solutions, especially for directional retrofits, spotlights and downlights.
