Light and color have a profound effect on our well-being and on the atmosphere of a room. Correct color rendering is animportant aspect of good lighting. A high color rendering index (CRI) means that objects appear in their “true” colors to the human eye. With its high-CRI OSLON 80° and 150° OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is closing in on perfection. As in natural daylight (CRI 100) all objects illuminated with these OSLON versions appear in their natural colors. This is thanks to the excellent color rendering index, typically 95. Realistic color rendering is important particularly in shops so that the goods purchased inside the shop look as good as they do outside in daylight. Items in exhibitions and pictures in museums should be presented in light that allows their true colors to shine out. Natural color rendering is also in demand in other general illumination applications, for example in the home. Despite this high CRI, every version of OSLON offers efficiency that stands comparison.
High quality of light
The high quality of light remains stable for a long period of time. The LED achieve a CRI value greater than 90 under all application conditions. The R values for color rendering are greater than 90 for R9 (red) as well as for R13 (skin tones). The two high-CRI LEDs are available in color temperatures of 2700 K, 3000 K (residential, museums), 3500 K and 4000 K (shop lighting).
The right product whatever the need
The different OSLON SSL products precisely match the various requirements posed by different applications:
- For premium applications indoors where natural color rendering is required LED with a very high CRI (CRI 95) are recommended even though the efficiency may be slightly lower (typically 65 lm/W at 3000 K/350 mA).
- Standard lighting systems, such as those installed in offices, are often best served by LEDs that strike a balance between CRI (CRI 82) and efficiency (typically 81 lm/W at 3000 K/350 mA).
- In the outdoor and industrial sectors CRI often plays a minor role (CRI 70), but here there are benefits to be had from much higher efficiency (typically 100 lm/W at 5000 K/350 mA).
OSLON SSL LEDs with different colors and color temperatures with different CRIs can also be used together in the same luminaire. The result is a modular system that gives luminaire designers enormous freedom.
Measuring only 3 x 3 mm, the light emitting diodes in the OSLON SSL family are extremely small and have either a narrow beam angle of 80° or a wide beam angle of 150°. While LEDs with a beam angle of 80° are particularly suitable for injecting light into external optics, the OSLON SSL 150° is ideal for retrofits and downlights in conjunction with reflectors. The wide beam characteristic means that best possible use is made of the light. LEDs can be closely clustered without any shadow effects, increasing luminaire efficiency by 6 to 10 percent. The low thermal resistance of the LEDs of 7 K/W makes thermal management much easier. And like all the other members of the OSLON family these CRI wonders combine high output with small dimensions – thanks to the latest chip technology.
